Senator Haridopolos Calls on Supreme Court to Push Up the Hearing Date on Amendment 5

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Tallahassee, Fla.—State Senator Mike Haridopolos (R-Indialantic), leading opponent of Amendment 5 and advocate for Florida’s future fiscal sustainability, today called on the Supreme Court to move up the hearing date on Amendment 5 in order for voters to make a well-informed decision and alleviate unnecessary confusion on November’s ballot.

“Amendment 5 will clearly make a tremendous impact on our state,” said Senator Haridopolos.  “Judge Cooper’s recent decision validates the arguments made by those in opposition of this fundamentally-flawed amendment.  Judge Cooper exposed the flaws in his questions and final decision, clearly stating the reasons the amendment should not appear on the ballot.”

“In addition to these fundamental flaws, our state faces additional challenges if we continue to wait for a final decision.  By waiting until September 8, ballots will be created with language that may or may not be on the ballot, costing the state valuable dollars and creating confusion for the electorate,” continued Senator Haridopolos.

“We understand that the Court has a set schedule and is flooded with numerous important requests, but this issue is of urgent importance to Florida voters who deserve a clean ballot, free of language that has been ruled unconstitutional.  Clearly, both sides know their arguments and the justices are well aware of the issue.  Either way, an expedited decision is in the best interest of our state, so we can either continue the debate or concentrate on the issues that meet constitutional standards.  I urge the Court to move up the hearing, in the best interest of Florida voters,” concluded Senator Haridopolos.
